As early as 1873, in the second half of the 19th century, the British Robert Davidson made the world's first practical electric car. That was more than 10 years before Germans Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz invented the gasoline-engined car.
Davidson invented the electric car is a truck, 4800mm long, 1800mm wide, using iron, zinc, amalgam and sulfuric acid reaction of the primary battery. Then, starting in 1880, a secondary battery that could be charged and discharged was applied. From the development of primary batteries to secondary batteries, this was a major technological change for electric vehicles at that time, and the demand for electric vehicles has greatly increased. In the second half of the 19th century, it became an important product of transportation, writing a brilliant page in the history of human transportation. In 1890, electric buses were running on the streets of France and London. At that time, the technology of internal combustion engine was still quite backward, with short mileage, many faults and difficult maintenance, while electric vehicles were convenient to maintain.
In Europe and the United States, the peak of electric vehicles was in the late 19th century. In 1899, Frenchman Cormen Guina drove a 44kW rear-wheel-drive electric car powered by two electric motors, setting a record speed of 106km per hour.
In 1900, 15,755 electric cars were built in the United States, 1,684 steam cars, and only 936 gasoline cars. After entering the 20th century, due to the continuous progress of internal combustion engine technology, the Model T of the Ford Motor Company came out in 1908, and the large-scale mass manufacturing of automobiles in the form of assembly line production made gasoline engine automobiles popular. As a result, steam engine automobiles and electric vehicles were eliminated by merciless years due to the lack of technical and economic performance in the market competition. The latter is shrinking.
